WordPress is a CMS and a lot of websites are basically just a template with written content. If you have a need to have users (the client) edit content, such as writing a new front page article then a CMS is what you will have to built. So to save time why not take one of the shelf that has had years of development rather then trying to cook up your own thing that has a developer community of one and a bug testing when you feel like it.

Because YOUR website is "special" it has a ton of things that WordPress doesn't do... and 99% of the time that is just not true or you shouldn't be making your site special anyway (if everyone does X one way, there probably is a reason for it) but sometimes your site really just can't be fitted into an existing package and that is when you build a custom site.

Think of it like cars, I can buy one straight from the showroom, there are carriage builders that will take a bare chassis and bold the structure of your design on top of it and then there are complete custom designs like say the NASA Mars Rover.
